The article deals with the works of the Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Frammartino who operates in the field of moviemaking and videoart. The works of M. Frammartino reflect the mythopoetic world view that is characterized by the idea that the world is a unity in which all elements are interconnected. The filmmaker lays the concept of metempsychosis of Pythagoras as a basis for the film “Le Quattro Volte” and demonstrates in a very poetic way how an old shepherd is reborn to become first a goat, then a tree and finally pieces of coal. The film also features a scene of the traditional feast when a gigantic fir tree is placed at the center and symbolizes death and revival. In the videoart work called “Alberi” the filmmaker reconstructs the traditional carnival of a small town in Calabria when the inhabitants are transformed into “rumiti”, tree hermits, putting on costumes made of leaves and branches. M. Frammartino underlines the integrity of the universe, the unity of the human and natural realms which he finds in the archaic way of life proper to Calabria and in the traditional culture. The filmmaker aims to get rid of the anthropocentrism, the leading role of humans in the universe, which is reflected both in the themes of his movies and in his style of filmmaking.
