The important element in G. Torrente Bellester’s novel “The Saga / Fugue of J.B.” is the image of Galicia, which is comprised of scenery descriptions, phrases in Galician introduced in the Spanish text, use of common stereotypes about the Galicians, references to Galician myths and historic events. The most fascinating characters have their prototypes among real historical figures who contributed considerably to the development of Galicia, shaping of the sense of national identity in people’s minds and forming a now-traditional image of this autonomous region in Spain. The analysis of these aspects in the novel gives an insight into the author’s literary method: his ironic reinterpretation of reality and its recreation in a new form, one of intellectual and fantastic nature.
