The Narrative Memory as the Place of the Collective Memory
Abstract
This text focuses on the figures of memory, whose status of shared heritage is to be interpreted on two levels.
1. Figures of memory as a shared heritage among several memory practices: myth, folklore, history, literature.
2. Figures of memory as a shared heritage of the members of a certain interliterary community. These two levels is illustrated by examples from Macedonian literature, paradigmatic for its intertextual openness to mythical / folklore prototexts and its interdiscursive position in relation to history, but also its membership in several interliterary centrisms (Yugoslav, South-Slavic, Balkan). Furthermore, its independence from the Federation and the need to redefine the framework of its own national literature intensify the literary reemphasis of the figures of memory. Thus contextualised, the interpretation has several implications:
1. It illustrates the palimpsestic dimension of literature, verified by the numerous recontextualisations of the figures of memory.
2. It demonstrates the mnemonic dimensions of literature and history: the common interest in the figures of memory allows their (inter)textual adjoining.
