Motley ‘šaren’ in the Macedonian Language
Abstract
The depth and brightness of the concept of ‘variegated’ became the source of the polysemy of terms that are used as attributes. This article proposes to analyze and describe the cases of the most frequent way to designate multi-colored in the Macedonian language. Such a term becomes a derivative from the common Balkan root ‘šara’. Given the dictionary interpretations of the adjective ‘šaren’, one may indicate that variegation characterizes an object as composed of different elements, decorated with a pattern or painted in different colors, heterogeneous. However, the found contexts testify to a wider range of meanings of ‘šaren’ in the Macedonian language.
