Grand tour of Emperor Nicholas I to Naples (1845)
Abstract
The article deals with the artistic aspects of the Russian Emperor Nicholas’ I visit to Naples in 1845 as a collector and philanthropist. He paid particular tribute to the works of the Posillipo’s school masters: Vervloet, Smargiassi, C. Carelli, G. Gigante, Duclere, who created high-quality landscape paintings, watercolors and drawings for the Russian monarch, considering his taste and preferences. This is an important component of the State Hermitage collections and the entire Russia’s museum fund, although it has not been sufficiently studied yet..
