New uses of reflexive verbs in modern Bulgarian literary language – Trend or Non-Standard
Abstract
This text analyzed the usage of the frequently found neutral impersonal reflexive verb sluchi se // sluchva se (‘to happen’) and its derivates in contemporary Bulgarian language. Apart from their normal use, which is mainly explained by means of the synonymic order in which the verb is dominant, these verbs are often found with (to a certain degree) irregular uses. Their appearance is due to the influence of English language (syntagms with ‘to happen’) and is typical for the journalistic style and political discourse. The influence of this innovation in other language styles (mainly the scientific) poses the question if this phenomenon is just a linguistic fashion or marks a tendency.
