Forms and Genres of Medieval European Literature: Thesaurus Issues
Abstract
This article presents a dictionary and a thesaurus as opposite poles. It identifies the major trends affecting the development of the thesaurus corresponding to the actual objectives of the study of the history of Medieval European literature. These trends are examined primarily on examples of genre definitions applied to samples of epic poems. In particular, it is proposed to pay attention to the mobility of the genre definitions, which functioned in the Middle Ages.
