On the History of Spanish Intonation Studies
Abstract
This article concerns the theoretical issues of Spanish intonology and the history of Spanish intonation studies. It presents the main ideas of various approaches used by Spanish and Latin American phoneticians for intonation description. In addition to reviewing the prosodic theories proposed by T. Navarro Tomás, A. Llorach and A. Quilis, on which the study of Spanish phonetics has traditionally been emphasized, this article also contains an analysis of the current state of Spanish intonology as well as a brief overview of researchers’ work in this field during the last several decades.
