The Origins and the Use of the Galician gheada

This article describes the origins and the use of the Galician gheada, which involves the pronunciation of the voiced velar occlusive [g] or fricative [ɣ] as a voiceless pharyngeal [h], as well as social attitudes towards it. Although accepted by the language norms, this phonetic phenomenon is marked sociolinguistically and keeps generating controversy among linguists and native speakers.
