Russian Classic Novel as “the contemplation of the universe”: the Origins of the Not-Novel Genre
Abstract
The article describes a principle of typology of Russian classic novel of the 19 century, which is based on the study of the genesis of this genre variety. As sources of a free-form and a fundamentally new content be which Russian classic novel is distinguished from the European novel, the article examines Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and Goethe’s “Faust”. Both of these texts are developing the similar, but the original in its realization (in terms of event-related) plot of salvation or restore fallen man. This plot was demanded in the 19 century by Russian classic novel. On this basis, it is proposed in the article to distinguish in Russian novel two lines – the “Dante’s” and the “Goethe’s” ones, in which are embodied two variants of the plot of salvation.
