“Potemkin’s Festivity” and the Daring of Derzhavin
Abstract
The article deals with the “Opisanie prazdnestva, byvshego po sluchayu vzyatiya Izmaila <...> 1791 goda aprelya 28 dnya” [The Description of the Fete, which was on the Occasion of the Capture of Ishmael <...> in 1791 April 28]. In this text, written to order, Derzhavin went beyond the ordinary descriptions and reached the incredible: he created the complete picture of his epoch in a single work of art, – the golden age of Catherine the Great.
