A visual image is the first thing the reader encounters during the initial perception of any written or printed text. It largely depends on such factors as font design, the use of typographic and iconic characters, punctuation. However, the primary factor of text perception is graphics and graphic means of text design.
The article deals with the problem of the functioning of graphic means in a work of art on the example of the novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky “The Insulted and Humili­ated”. Graphic selections as a means of creating imagery were the subject of the article. The novelty of the article lies in the fact that it reveals the features of the use of graphic selections in the novel “The Insulted and Humiliated”, defines the parts of speech of words graphically highlighted in the work, as well as the functions of graphic selections.
